Red & Green … NOT Just for Decorations!

Insiders Viewpoint: Expert Supermarket Advice: Red & Green … NOT Just for Decorations! Tyra Carter, United Supermarkets. Fruits And Veggies More Matters.org

Even as early as October, we begin to see the appearance of red and green in shopping centers and malls…and we know that Christmas is just around the corner! This is my favorite time of year and I certainly get into the decorating mode with no coaxing at all. In fact, my husband and I decided last year that we would decorate by the end of October this year just so we would be free to enjoy holidays without extra fuss. This seemed like a great idea to him last year. But in September over dinner he said, "Are we going to go all out again this year or just put up a few things?" Seems he asks me that same question every year and the answer is…well, can you guess?

But this year in the midst of holiday hustle, bustle and celebrations, think of the many ways you could add holiday colors to your table as well. In addition, let the kids play a role in grocery shopping by allowing them to choose red and green produce for their meals and snacks. If children become involved in purchasing and preparing fruits and veggies for meals and snacks, they’re more likely to eat them! Perhaps you could have a goal of allowing each child to choose one red or green fruit or veggie per shopping trip.

Health & Wellbeing
Aside from being loaded with vitamins and minerals, beneficial plant chemicals and fiber, red and green produce provide specific benefits to promote health and wellbeing as well as reduce risk of disease.

Red fruits & veggies promote heart health, as well as healthy aging. This category also reduces risk for some forms of cancer.

Green fruits & veggies promote vision health and strong bones and teeth. Just like red produce, this category also reduces risk for some forms of cancer.

Unique Ways to Enjoy Red or Green Produce
Mixing fresh cranberries with jalapenos and fresh cilantro makes a truly Texas-style salsa just right for the holidays. The red and green bell pepper boats are a great recipe that kids can help assemble. And acorn squash serves as a bowl for turkey, apples, cranberries and mushrooms – a delicious holiday main dish! These recipes have become favorites of my family, friends and associates. Enjoy!
