A Healthier Traditional Holiday Menu

5 Ways to Take Fat & Calories Out of Your Holiday Menu

  1. Turkey. Remove the skin from the turkey before serving. Add a little olive oil, lemon, and herbs to provide an even more satisfying taste to your meal!
  2. Mashed Potatoes. Use low-fat or non-fat milk instead of heavy cream. Also, use low-fat sour cream instead of butter. Try our Garlic Mashed Potatoes!
  3. Pumpkin Pie. Use egg whites/substitutes and fat-free evaporated milk for the filling. Cut even more calories by skipping the crust and taking a spoon directly to the pie filling!
  4. Vegetables. Roast or steam potatoes, green beans, carrots, or Brussels sprouts with herbs and a vinaigrette dressing instead of using a creamy sauce or butter.
  5. Stuffing. Make a healthier stuffing by using canola oil, a fat-free, low-sodium chicken broth, and egg whites. You can also use whole-grain bread instead of white bread.

5 Ways to Take Fat & Calories Out of Your Kids’ Holiday Menu
  1. Macaroni & Cheese. Use nonfat milk instead of whole milk, reduced-fat cheddar cheese instead of whole-milk cheese, and a little Dijon mustard and pepper instead of salt.
  2. Turkey. Remove the skin from the turkey before serving. Add a little olive oil, lemon, and herbs for a very satisfying taste!
  3. Veggies. Make a healthy, kid-friendly side dish such as our Crazy, Curly Broccoli Bake instead of one of your traditional side dishes, and don’t forget to ask the kids to help! Or try our mashed sweet potatoes!
  4. Homemade Biscuits. Kids love bread! (Don’t we all!) Use low- or non-fat milk instead of whole milk or buttermilk, and replace white (enriched) flour with whole-grain flour. Use low-fat butter or olive oil instead of regular butter.
  5. Dessert. Do your kids like your peach cobbler? Slim it down a little with our Peach & Pear Rise and Shine Cobbler.

TIP Have picky kids? Get them involved in the cooking process. This will make them more excited about eating the finished product!

  3. Simple Salad. Combine spinach, water chestnuts, tomatoes, cucumbers, almonds, and apples. Use vinaigrette or olive oil dressing rather than a creamy dressing. Or Try Our Recipe Broccoli Mandarin Orange Salad
  4. Cranberry Relish. Blend cranberries with apples and oranges. Add a pinch of sugar or a sweetener. Try our 10-Minute Cranberry Sauce and Cranberry Chutney recipes too!
  5. Green Bean Casserole. Instead of using a heavy cream sauce, use a low-sodium cream soup (with skim milk). Combine green beans, garlic and peppers and you’re done! Or Try Our Recipe Green Beans with Roasted Red Peppers
