What’s the best way to store fruits and veggies?
We’re glad you asked! Storing your fruits and veggies properly is one of the best ways to keep them fresh and delicious longer.
Store the following fruits and vegetables in the refrigerator (below 40 degrees F) to preserve freshness and slow spoilage:
FRUITS: berries, grapes, cherries, apples (can be stored at room temperature short-term), melons and pineapples once cut, cut fruit, pears
VEGETABLES: leafy greens or vegetables, broccoli, cauliflower, carrots, celery, peppers, cucumbers, green beans, snap peas, mushrooms, asparagus, Brussels sprouts, cabbage, cut vegetables, radishes, summer squashes, sweet corn
Store these fruits and vegetables at room temperature as they are sensitive to cold and may lose flavor or texture at colder temperatures:
FRUITS: bananas, mangoes, papayas, avocados (until ripe), stone fruits (peaches, plums, nectarines) until ripe, citrus fruits, melons, pomegranates, apples (less than 7 days) – all fruits listed can be refrigerated after ripening.
VEGETABLES: potatoes, sweet potatoes, onions, garlic, winter squash (acorn, butternut), tomatoes, eggplant
*All fresh fruits and vegetables should be refrigerated once they’ve been cut.
Ripen these fruits at room temperature, then refrigerate them (and use within 1-3 days) to extend their shelf life:
FRUITS: avocados, stone fruits (peaches, plums, nectarines), kiwi, whole melons
Other tips for storing fruits and vegetables:
