Can Fruits and Vegetables be Incorporated into a Diet for People with Epilepsy?

Answer

Fruits and vegetables can be incorporated into a diet for people with epilepsy, however, this population usually follows a ketogenic diet that requires careful planning, according to the Epilepsy Foundation. This diet therapy is a high-fat, low-carbohydrate, moderate protein diet aimed at decreasing seizure activity.  The Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics encourages consumption of carbohydrate foods with a lower glycemic index and high fiber content such as non-starchy vegetables, nuts, and seeds.
A consultation with an individual’s healthcare team including a Registered Dietitian Nutritionist (RDN) is strongly advised before starting a ketogenic diet for assessment of the appropriate diet plan and to ensure there is complete understanding of the diet protocol, required testing, and follow-up care.
