TheBUZZ Diet can affect your pancreatic cancer risk?

WHAT THEY’RE SAYING
Adults who maintain a healthy diet have a 15% lower risk of developing pancreatic cancer.

WHAT WE KNOW

Pancreatic cancer, the fourth leading cause of cancer death in the United States, has a high mortality rate. Being very overweight is a known risk factor for this cancer.¹ Eating a diet rich in a variety of fruits and vegetables may reduce the risk of getting this serious disease, especially for overweight men.

HOW DO WE KNOW THIS

Based on a study of food questionnaires from more than 500,000 adult Americans, researchers found an association between healthy eating (defined as following federal dietary guidelines) and decreased risk of pancreatic cancer. In the August 2013 issue of the Journal of the National Cancer Institute, researchers report that people who follow the recommendations for a healthy diet, including eating a variety of fruit and vegetables, lower their chances of pancreatic cancer by 15%. This association is stronger in men who were overweight or obese, compared to normal-weight men; no association was found when comparing normal-weight women with those women who were overweight or obese.²

OUR ADVICE

You can modify your risk factors for certain serious diseases like pancreatic cancer with a healthy diet that includes plenty of fruits and vegetables and by changing other lifestyle choices such as avoiding smoking, excessive alcohol consumption, and being sedentary. Think about ways you can add more fruits and vegetables to your meals each day. A good way to start is by filling half your plate with fruit and veggies, whether at home, work, or eating out. It’s a good approach to eating well and maintaining a healthy weight, which may also lower your risk of cancer and other serious diseases.
