What exactly are ‘healthy foods’?

Answer

To help with the understanding of what is healthy and what isn’t, the USDA introduced the MyPlate Icon, which demonstrates the dietary guidelines for Americans. The Dietary Guidelines for Americans 2010 illustrates strategies that focus on consuming fewer calories, making informed food choices and being physically active to help Americans maintain their weight, reduce their risk for chronic diseases and promote overall health. The Dietary Guidelines for Americans 2010 is intended for Americans ages 2 years and older, including those at increased risk of chronic disease.

The current recommendations support fruits and vegetables as foods that should be eaten most often. And for most Americans, this means more than doubling the amount of fruits and vegetables they eat daily. The healthy plate icon is sectioned off to show fruits and vegetables as half of the plate making the recommendation easy to understand.
